Our Art and Design Curriculum

Statement of Intent

At St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, we want our children to love art, craft and design! We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and to grow up wanting to be illustrators, graphic designers, fashion designers, curators, architects or printmakers. Our Art curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills to be able to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. As pupils progress, they should gain a deeper understanding of how Art and Design reflects and shapes our history, and how it contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our world. We want to equip our children with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the Art and Design National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. We want our children to use the local area as inspiration, to learn from other cultures and to respect diversity. To that end, we have carefully selected a wide range of unique and diverse artists, craft makers and designers for children to study.

Statement of Implementation

Art is taught in every year group, once per week on a half-term cycle.

Every child is given the opportunity to learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, sculpture and digital art through the exploration of an initial key artist, craft maker or designer and their work.

Our Key Stage 1 Curriculum aims to enable our children to:

  • use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
  • use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.
  • develop a wide range of art and design techniques using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.
  • learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Our Key Stage 2 Curriculum aims to enable our children to:

  • create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
  • improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay].
  • learn about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Statement of Impact

The impact of our Art & Design Curriculum will lead to pupils having an improved and embedded range of artistic skills and have an awareness of a  broad range of artists and
craftspeople, and be able to consider and discuss the artworks they come across.
Our Art and Design curriculum will also lead pupils to be enthusiastic Art and Design learners, who are confident to explore, take risks and value the process of their learning journey.
